Illinois Basketball to Face North Carolina in Nashville Non-Conference Clash
The Illini continue to schedule quality high-major opponents in their non-conference slates.
It was announced today that the Illinois Fighting Illini and the North Carolina Tar Heels will meet in Nashville for a non-conference showdown on January 30. This marks the second consecutive season that Illinois basketball will play a non-conference game in Nashville, following last year’s win over Tennessee.
Nashville remains a desirable destination for fans, and head coach Brad Underwood will bring his team back to the Music City in back-to-back years. Illinois fans are known for traveling well and will certainly show up in full force for this rematch of the 2005 national championship.
Illinois is expected to be favored. As of now, Illinois ranks No. 13 in Bart Torvik’s early 2027 projections, while North Carolina sits at No. 24. The Tar Heels will be without Second Team All-ACC selection Henri Veesaar, who opted to remain in the NBA Draft, as well as All-ACC honorable mention guard Seth Trimble, who has exhausted his eligibility and will pursue a professional career.
Since North Carolina’s victory in the 2005 national title game in St. Louis, the two programs have met twice. The Illini have won both matchups. The head-to-head series is currently tied at 4-4.
What to expect?
North Carolina enters a new era. The Tar Heels chose to move on from Hubert Davis and unexpectedly turn to Mike Malone. The longtime NBA head coach will look to quickly reestablish the Tar Heels as national title contenders.
Both teams will briefly step away from conference play for this late-January non-conference matchup. These midseason non-league games have become increasingly common, as programs look to strengthen their resumes and prepare for the NCAA Tournament. Illinois basketball previously played Duke in a February matchup, and several teams followed suit last season at neutral-site venues.
Underwood has consistently scheduled aggressively, with Illinois ranking No. 12 nationally in strength of schedule last season according to KenPom. This matchup vs UNC is expected to feature as one of several high-profile non-conference games on the Illini’s 2026–27 schedule.
