Illinois Football: A look Into Bobby Hauck’s 3-3-5 Defense
Why new Illini defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck believes Illini fans will love this “exciting” and “aggressive” defense.

At Montana, Bobby Hauck spent 15 seasons mastering a 3‑3‑5 defensive system that helped the Grizzlies reach 13 playoff appearances, 4 national title games, 20 playoff wins, and 8 Big Sky conference championships. In fact, the Illini’s new defensive coordinator calls it the most fun defense he’s ever coached. Now, Hauck is excited to bring that proven winning blueprint to an Illinois Football program eager for a strong, identity-defining defense.
“I love defensive football, and this is the most fun defense I’ve ever coached,” Hauck said during an Interview with head coach Bret Bielema. He also added, “This is going to be an aggressive, attacking, exciting defense to watch.” The Illini’s new DC traced the scheme’s lineage from Joe Lee Dunn to Rocky Long and others, which he’s refined over his 23 years of head coaching experience. “People who watch football like the excitement of it… defense can be exciting too,” he emphasized.
Despite a 9-4 season in 2025, defensive frustrations stemming from a lack of overall aggression, pressure, and ability to make stops on third down lowered Illinois ceiling in 2025, and led Illini fans to overwhelmingly voice support for a change at the position.
The question is, will Hauck’s 3-3-5 prove to be the missing piece to coach Bret Bielema and the Illini’s puzzle?
Perks of the 3-3-5 Scheme
The 3‑3‑5 replaces a traditional down lineman with a hybrid/extra defensive back, giving the unit speed, flexibility, and the ability to disguise pressure and coverages. The scheme thrives on movement and post-snap confusion, forcing offenses to react on the fly. That said, discipline, communication, and cohesion will be key to the proper execution of this scheme.
Illinois already has athletic defensive back leaders like Xavier Scott, Juice Clarke, and Matt Bailey, who must mesh with rangy linebackers such as James Kreutz, Grant Beerman, and Colorado State transfer Robert Edmonson, well-suited for the hybrid roles. Additionally, the “star” position, a hybrid safety/linebacker, can cover in space and support against the run.
Up front, linemen must occupy blockers — especially at the nose tackle position, who needs to handle double teams, freeing linebackers to flow downhill to the ball. This defense is won or lost at the point of attack, and for the scheme to succeed, Illinois needs three strong linemen who can consistently generate pressure and be strong in run support up front. However, it’s 3 on 5, so you must be sturdy and creative.
With more speed on the field, Hauck can unleash unique blitz packages and generate pressure from multiple angles to keep offenses guessing.
Hauck wants Illinois to play aggressive, exciting football that fans enjoy and players embrace. However, the Illini’s new DC emphasized the importance of relentless pursuit and effort, as well as strong tackling. With Hauck leading the way, Illinois Football has a chance to modernize its identity and take a step forward as a program. If executed well, the 3‑3‑5 could be the missing ingredient the Illini need to compete consistently in the Big Ten and for College Football Playoff appearances.
All things considered, there are some concerns to the scheme as well.
Potential Concerns for The Fighting Illini’s New Defense
All things considered, the aggressiveness that makes the scheme so exciting also introduces real risk.
With only three down linemen, the defense can be vulnerable against downhill rushing attacks, especially if opponents control the line of scrimmage. Additionally, offensive lines that generate movement and climb to the second level can force linebackers to take on blocks rather than flow freely to the football. Once those linebackers are covered up, interior run lanes can open quickly.
The key is a sturdy front three, particularly at nose tackle, capable of absorbing double teams and preventing vertical push. If the nose can command space and occupy blockers, it keeps the scheme structure intact and allows linebackers to flow cleanly. After heavy roster turnover — and with defensive line coach Terrance Jamison departing for the NFL — a pressing question is whether Illinois’ retooled defensive line, mostly built on transfers, can anchor the system early. Illinois will need a big season from Penn Transfer Carter Janki, who has high potential to assume the NT position in 2026, along with Darrell Prater, Isaiah Thomison, and others.
Plus, because the 3-3-5 relies on disguise and movement, any miscommunication or missed assignment can be costly in pass protection. Safeties are heavily involved in run support, which can leave space behind them if play-action fully develops. Thankfully for Illinois, Veteran safety Matthew Bailey’s decision to return for one final season prior to making the NFL jump provides stability and leadership in the secondary. Regardless, the margin for error remains thin.
Final Thoughts
All said, the 3-3-5 walks a fine line between feast and famine. Considering Hauck only recently joined Illinois’ recruiting efforts and is still settling into his role, early growing pains are inevitable. However, if he can develop his system as planned, he’ll be running a scheme that won a lot of football games in Missoula.
