Bielema Reflects on A Rare 9-3 Season For Illinois Football Since

Illinois Football is fresh off their first 9-win season in 17 years, following a 38-28 victory over rival Northwestern at a chilly Wrigley Field. The win re-secured Abe’s Hat for the Illini, capping a season that signals a new era in Champaign.

After enduring an up-and-down (mostly down) stretch during the 2010s, head coach Bret Bielema has seemingly fostered a winning culture in Champaign. In just four years, Bielema has guided the Fighting Illini to two 8+ win seasons (2022, 2024). Under his leadership, Illinois has totaled 27 victories, in addition to an 18-18 record in Big Ten play—a significant improvement for a program that has struggled to find consistency for years.

Following a milestone win over the Rival Wildcats, Bielema expressed his optimism about the future of Illinois Football.

Quote From Bielema

“Just a couple of things go our way, I think we’re easily in the top 15, and maybe in the top 10. I’m excited to see exactly where we can go, and what we can do.”

“Listen, I wish we could have gotten won more win right? But, we lost to two really really talented football teams in Penn State and Oregon, that are top-4 in the country, and lost to a Minnesota team that was a rivalry game. I think the heartbreak of the whole thing is getting that close in the end, and not getting into the endzone (Vs Minnesota).

It’s a good sign of where we are. To think that Illinois from when I came here four years ago, is knocking on the door of a college football playoffs, it’s pretty awesome.
