Illinois Football adds Jim Leonhard as Senior Analyst

Bret Bielema continues to make Big Boy moves. He most recently announced that former Wisconsin defensive coordinator and interim head coach, Jim Leonhard will join Illinois football as a senior analyst. That is quite the hire. Leonhard was a defensive coordinator candidate, and even was a name thrown around prior to Bielema’s hire as a head coach.

Leonhard has consistently had Wisconsin defenses in the top tier of College Football defenses. Hiring a coach of his stature as an analyst is quite the move. Leonhard can be a fantastic resource for first-time defensive coordinator, Aaron Henry. The entire defensive staff will also benefit from Leonhard’s presence.

Proven Results:

During Leonhard’s first five seasons as the defensive Coordinator in Madison, the Badgers ranked in the top five in total defense four times. The Badgers also thrived in scoring defense, as they forced 112 turnovers during that span. That is fourth most amongst power-five programs. Though I assume that Leonhard’s stop in Champaign will not be permanent, having him as a resource as they transition from Ryan Walters will be such a great resource. Leonhard also had a pretty nice professional career in the NFL which can be used as a nice recruiting sell. The Illini defense has had an improved sell. They have had multiple defensive backs go to the NFL,  and D-line play has slowly become a strength. The late Bobby Roundtree was outstanding in his seasons as an Illini, and players like Seth Coleman, Gabe Jacas, and the Law Firm have all showed that they are next level talents.

Exciting times in Champaign

Bielema has had an eventful week. Him and his wife, Jen, donated 133 tickets for the seven home games to community programs.  They also have new jerseys! Big Ten media day is approaching and the start of the season is almost here.
