Illinois Football Announces Three Official Kickoff Times

News: Illinois football officially released kickoff times for its first three games of the 2026 season on Tuesday.

According to a release from the program, Bret Bielema’s squad will begin its 2026 season under the lights on Thursday, Sept. 3, against the UAB Blazers, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network. The Thursday night home opener is Illinois’ first standalone primetime game of the season and should bring a strong early crowd to Champaign, as anticipation of the approaching 2026 season finally comes to a close.

Then, Illinois will return home the following weekend for its most intriguing non-conference matchup vs Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils, which is scheduled for Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m. CT on FS1 as part of Hall of Fame Weekend in Champaign. Last season, Illinois went on the road to Durham and handled Duke (Led by talented quarterback Darian Mensah) 45-19, making a rematch in Champaign just a little bit more interesting. 

Finally, the Illini will close out the 3-game opening home stretch against the Southern Illinois Salukis on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. CT on Peacock before looking forward to a really tough showdown with the Ohio State in week 4.

An Important 3 Game Stretch for Illinois Football

With several important new pieces in place entering 2026, these first three home games feel especially important for Illinois Football, as they look to build off last season’s 9-4 campaign and carry momentum forward into the sixth season of the Bret Bielema era. The Duke matchup, in particular, should serve as a solid early measuring-stick game for a roster replacing major leadership and production on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Illinois will be turning the keys over to transfer quarterback Katin Houser, who will have some big shoes to fill following 3 seasons of Luke Altmyer, who was recently picked up by the Detroit Lions. 

Defensively, the Illini will also be adjusting to first-year defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck and his new 3-3-5 scheme, which will undoubtedly require time for players to settle into new responsibilities and fully grow comfortable within the fresh system.

With Ohio State looming after week 3, Illinois will likely view this opening stretch as a critical opportunity to build confidence, establish identity, and get the season moving in the right direction before the schedule really heats up in Big Ten play.
