Illinois Football Announces Two Offensive injuries prior to 2026 season

As the Illinois Football program prepares for its September 3rd home opener against UAB, the Illini have made it through the opening stretch of fall camp without many major injury setbacks to this point. That said, as the team continues to ramp up the intensity and put together meaningful days, including a full scrimmage, the inevitable bumps and bruises have started to show up.

Unfortunately, a couple of tough blows were announced by Illinois Football head coach Bret Bielema following Wednesday’s scrimmage. Bielema broke the news during Thursday’s media days in Champaign, providing updates on both injuries and the potential timelines for each player.

BJ Thurman – Tight End (Foot)

San Mateo (JUCO) transfer BJ Thurman is expected to miss the 2026 season.  Thurman unfortunately suffered a Jones fracture in his foot. The injury will require surgery, which is highly unfortunate for a player who entered Champaign with high expectations as the No. 1 JUCO tight end in the country.

Thurman showed plenty of promise during his freshman season at College of San Mateo, recording 16 catches for 332 yards and six touchdowns. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, his combination of size and athleticism gave him a legitimate chance to become a major piece of Barry Lunney Jr.’s offense this fall.

 His absence also puts more pressure on Christian Abney, Davin Stoffel and former running back Kaden Feagin to step up and produce at a position that will be crucial for new QB Katin Houser and the Illini offense.

Alex Perry – Wide Receiver (Shoulder)

Illinois also announced a significant loss at wide receiver. FIU transfer Alex Perry is dealing with a nerve issue in his shoulder. Perry will undergo surgery with a specialist in New York. Bielema said Thursday that Perry could still return later this season, but expects the wide receiver to miss most of the year.

While Perry’s absence hurts Justin Stepp’s receiver room, the Illini do have depth to work with. Hudson Clement, Collin Dixon and Brayden Trimble all return in 2026. Additionally, FAU transfer Jayshon Platt has reportedly made a strong early impression in camp.

What It Means

For a team still working through the early stages of fall camp, losing two potential contributors is far from ideal. That said, it’s not a dagger to the hopes of the season by any means.
