Illinois football will play Western Illinois

Illinois Football kicks off game week close to full strength, as Bret Bielema’s veteran roster readies themselves for their anticipated season week one matchup with in-state FCS foe Western Illinois. It’s the Illini’s first step in a season filled with heightened expectations, as Bielema enters his 5th year at the helm in Champaign, with one of the most experienced rosters in the Big Ten.

Of course, many outlets — including us — expect the Fighting Illini to open the 2025 season with a big win. However, while Western Illinois may not present the Illini’s toughest test, a potential blowout offers Illinois an opportunity to start fast in front of a packed home crowd and fine-tune depth ahead of a massive early showdown in week two against Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils.

The key, of course, will be staying healthy — and luckily for Illinois Football, Bielema says his roster is intact, and ready to kick off week one of the 2025 season.

Week One Injury Report: Bret Bielema Updates ahead of Illinois Football vs Western Illinois

During his open media availability on Monday (8/25) afternoon, the Illini head coach sounded confident about his team’s health heading into Friday night’s season opener. Bielema noted that, barring any last-minute setbacks before 6:30 pm on Friday, the Illini roster should be nearly at full strength, with only a handful of rotational pieces still being monitored for the time being.

Really, everybody is back with us,” stated the Illini head coach.

JC Davis practiced Saturday, and practiced today. So, didn’t have any issues and felt good about that.

Bielema continued, “Got a couple of our guys back from some soft tissue (injuries). There are maybe two or three that we’ll see how they handle this week to see where it’s at. But, nobody really of significance or of note.
