A Night Franklin (And Illinois Football Fans) Won’t Forget

Undoubtedly, Bret Bielema‘s staff hit a home run when they locked down Ole Miss transfer Zakhari Franklin. Those following Illinois Football closely, know the sheer level of talent and athleticism #4 possesses. Of course, dating back to his days at UTSA, when he absolutely torched the Illini at home.

Franklin’s talent was put on display for a sold-out Memorial Stadium, as Illinois found a way to pull off a major upset over Lance Leipold‘s 19th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. This 23-17 victory, certainly puts momentum in the Illini’s favor, as they dive deeper into the 2024 schedule.

A security blanket

In week 2, the Illini offense found different, creative ways to get the ball into Franklin’s hands. Ultimately, a major factor in the Illini pulling off the win. Of course, with the help of some beautiful passes dialed up by Luke Altmyer. Zakhari totaled 99 yards, on 9 receptions, leading the way for all Illini receivers. Of course, including a beautiful one-handed catch that ignited Memorial Stadium, and shifted momentum in Illinois’ favor. Ultimately, a late offensive spark was too much to handle for Kansas, and Franklin was a key contributor to the cause.

The Texas native’s sure-handedness appears to give Luke Altmyer and the Illini offense confidence attacking creatively through to the air. Certainly, having a Kaden Feagin to be the workhorse of your offense is awesome. However, when a defense sells out on the run, there has to be an efficient passing game for Illinois Football to win 6+ games. Paired with Pat Bryant, who has also had 2 great games for Illinois, and this Illini receivers’ room is legit.
