Terrence Shannon Jr. poised to breakout in year two with Timberwolves
Can the former Illini find his way onto the court amongst a deep team of perimeter players?

Terrence Shannon Jr. had a limited role with the Minnesota Timberwolves during his rookie season. He was in a tough situation in which he proved that he was too good a player to spend time in the NBA G-League, however, not as experienced enough to play ahead of proven NBA veterans. Shannon Jr. stayed with it, however, and ultimately proved his value in the playoffs by providing quality minutes.
The former college basketball superstar caught the eyes of the Timberwolves executives and national basketball analysts. Wolves Lead (@TWolvesLead on X) shared comments from Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch regarding Shannon’s role for the upcoming season. Finch stated:
“Next year, he (Shannon) is going to be a significant part of our rotation.”

Shannon Jr. is already preparing for a breakout year
The rookie guard appeared in just 32 games last season, averaging 10.6 minutes, 4.3 points, 1.5 rebounds, and one assist per game. With an expanded role expected, those numbers should increase significantly.
Terrence Shannon Jr. is known for his ability to elevate his game during the offseason. He averaged just 9.8 points per game as a freshman at Texas Tech before developing into an All-American, putting up 23 points per game in his senior year at Illinois.
This summer, the former All-American guard is returning to Champaign to train with Illinois strength and conditioning coach Adam Fletcher. Shannon emphasized how important Coach Fletch has been to his development and explained why he’s back in Champaign:
“Just to work with Coach Fletch. It’s the best my body has ever felt since I started working with him. Every time I get back with him it gets better and better. I trust my body. I will always be coming back here.”
Former Illini and All-Big Ten player Marcus Domask will also join Shannon in Champaign this offseason to prepare for the season ahead. With his strong work ethic and focused summer training, Shannon looks ready to make his mark on the NBA next season.
