Former Illini Morez Johnson Jr. commits to Big Ten Rival
The Chicago big man will still have to face the Illini at least once a year.
Just a few short days ago, Morez Johnson Jr. announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. The decision came as a gut punch to all Illini fans. Johnson Jr. had become somewhat of a fan favorite. He had been committed to Illinois since his sophomore year of high school and had just finished a rather successful freshman campaign. He showed flashes of becoming a program cornerstone with his motor and rebounding prowess. After Johnson Jr. entered the portal, there were reports surfacing that he was frustrated with his role and with his fit in the Illini offense. From what we have heard, money was really not an issue in this transfer, despite there being reports that Johnson Jr. would command a high NIL tag.
Regardless, Morez Johnson Jr. will still be in the lives of Illini basketball fans as he has committed to the University of Michigan.
Villain Era
Dusty May and Michigan basketball seem back. After some tough years under Juwan Howard, May took his team to the Sweet 16 and a Big Ten tournament championship. Johnson Jr.’s commitment to Michigan is a perfect fit as big men Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin will not be on the roster next year. The opportunity is there for Johnson Jr in the frontcourt.
Despite this news, Illinois basketball should be in a prime position to land a replacement for the talented freshman. Stay patient, Illini fans. The transfer portal season is just underway.
