Illinois Basketball to host five-star center Dylan Betts for Unofficial Visit

Illinois basketball has landed another major recruiting opportunity, as five-star 2028 center Dylan Betts has scheduled an unofficial visit to Champaign for Sept. 18-20. While the recruiting process is still in its early stages, getting one of the nation’s premier young prospects on campus is another sign the Illini are firmly back in the mix for elite high school talent.

Brad Underwood‘s renewed emphasis on high school recruiting continues to gain momentum.

Betts is ranked as the No. 11 overall player in the 2028 class and the No. 4 center nationally by the 247Sports Composite. At 7-foot-3 and 230 pounds, the IMG Academy standout possesses the type of size that immediately commands attention from every major program in the country.

Illinois basketball has made a habit of developing skilled big men under Underwood. Betts’ combination of length, mobility and upside has already made him one of the most coveted prospects in the 2028 cycle despite still having multiple years of high school basketball remaining.

The Colorado native transferred to IMG Academy before his sophomore season. This move gave him the opportunity to compete against some of the nation’s best competition while continuing his development on one of high school basketball’s biggest stages.

Betts also comes from an accomplished basketball family. He is the younger brother of UCLA’s Lauren Betts, one of the top players in women’s college basketball, and has quickly carved out his own reputation as one of the country’s most intriguing young prospects.

Of course, recruiting in the NIL era remains fluid, especially this early in a player’s recruitment. A scheduled visit in 2026 doesn’t guarantee a commitment two years down the road. But it does matter.

Landing a visit from a five-star, top-15 national recruit is another indication that Illinois’ Final Four appearance and Underwood’s recent success are resonating with elite high school players. The Illini are once again attracting the caliber of recruits that can change the trajectory of a program, and Betts’ September visit will be another important step in that pursuit.
