Illinois basketball: Possible matchups in the 2026 Big Ten Tournament
The Illini will officially start its postseason slate on Friday March 13th.
Illinois basketball clinched a 15-win Big Ten season. The Illini, despite some bumps in the road, finish the season 24-7 overall. They finish in the top five of Kenpom and also do not own a loss outside of quadrant one games. The Illini won the 2021 and the 2024 Big Ten Tournament behind some stellar play from their star players. Can the Illini find that same magic? We dive into some of the possible matchups ahead for the Illini.
First Round: Quarterfinals vs…
Illinois basketball will await the winner of Wisconsin and either USC or Washington. The Illini lost their sole meeting with Wisconsin in a tough overtime loss at home. Though the Illini were without both Kylan Boswell and Andrej Stojakovic, they actually should have won their game vs the Badgers. The Badgers, however, are primed for a deep run in March. They were one of two teams that beat the Michigan Wolverines. They also hold wins over the likes of Illinois and Purdue.
Assuming Wisconsin beats either USC or Washington, it should be an interesting opportunity for a revenge game.
If the Illini win their first game…
If Illinois basketball wins its game vs Wisconsin, then they will likely play one of Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Oregon, or Maryland. Amongst that group, Michigan is the heavy favorite to come out to the semi-finals. The Illini were thoroughly outclassed by the Michigan Wolverines in their sole matchup, hence it may be another opportunity for revenge
Regardless of who the Illini play, this is one last measuring stick before the NCAA tournament. Hopefully, the Illini bring their A-game and flash their full potential.
