Illinois basketball defeated in-state rival Northwestern on Wednesday night to continue its pursuit of a Big Ten regular-season championship. Northwestern made a late push, but Illinois once again fought off a strong run on the road.
Wednesday night’s win marked the Illini’s fourth road victory of the season, their most in conference play since 2004–05. They also moved up to No. 5 nationally at KenPom and kept pace with the top of the league.
Minnesota presents a new challenge, as Illinois will have to defend home court again without students on campus. The Golden Gophers are 3–3 in conference play, with recent losses coming in overtime to USC and on a buzzer-beater against Wisconsin.
Minnesota is better than its record suggests, but Illinois is the more talented team and should be able to win by double digits. The Illini are currently 16.5-point favorites and hold a clear talent advantage.
The Golden Gophers are well-coached under first-year head coach Niko Medved and feature one of the Big Ten’s leading scorers in Cade Tyson. Illinois will need to key in on him defensively, like how they handled Bennett Stirtz of Iowa and Nick Martinelli of Northwestern.
Illinois basketball should take care of business and extend its winning streak to eight games.
