Is Illinois Basketball Closing in on Their Top Transfer Portal Target?
Wisconsin’s John Blackwell is down to at top two, which includes Illinois… How close is Brad Underwood from closing the deal?
Illinois Basketball could be on the verge of landing its top transfer portal target. According to 247Sports and CBS Sports national basketball analyst Travis Branham, former Wisconsin guard John Blackwell (son of former Illini Basketball guard Glynn Blackwell ) is strongly considering two schools for his next destination: Illinois and Duke.
For an Illinois Basketball program fresh off a 2026 Final Four run and aggressively retooling its roster for a national title push in 2027, it’s a major opportunity to land one of the portal’s premier scoring guards, who has proven high-level production against some stiff competition, in the toughest conference in all of college basketball. The 6-foot-4 guard is coming off an impressive junior season where he averaged 19.1 points per game while shooting 38.9% from the field and a consistent 43% from deep. The Michigan native broke out as a third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2026, in addition to being one of the conference’s most dangerous perimeter scorers.
For Illinois Basketball, it’s a no-doubt fit. With backcourt turnover this offseason, Blackwell would step into a lead guard role immediately, providing scoring punch, elite perimeter shooting, and non-coachable seasoned experience. His trajectory and shooting ability align perfectly with what the Illini need as they look to build on a Final Four run and remain firmly in the national title conversation.
According to On3 and Rivals, Illinois currently holds a 53.3% chance to land Blackwell. With offseason exit meetings and NIL discussions continuing to unfold, a decision could be coming sooner rather than later.
