Former Illini Luke Altmyer to get big opportunity with Detroit Lions

Former Illini Luke Altmyer went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft; however, quickly signed on with the Detroit Lions. The Lions, who have been one of the best offenses in the NFL, seemed rather set at the starting QB position with veteran Jared Goff. However, their backup position has always been up for grabs, and it seemed like a strong fit for Altmyer.

Over the weekend, Altmyer’s chances to see the field exponentially increased. The expected backup, Teddy Bridgewater, announced that he is retiring from the NFL. Though the Lions brought in veteran Josh Dobbs, coach Dan Campbell praised Altmyer’s camp performance and seemed high on the former Illini’s chances.

Campbell stated in media availability that “He [Altmyer] was put in some really tough positions for a young player that you absolutely have to be put in; you just do. You’ve got to be thrust in it, and really you need to fail, you need to make mistakes so that you can grow.”

Luke Altmyer remains grateful

Luke Altmyer said in media availability, “It brings about opportunity for myself. The standard is to play good football no matter how many reps or whatever my role is. I have a job to do, and my job is to do that very well at a high level. I’m thankful and believe in my abilities, and I’m going to go cut it loose, whatever that looks like.”

Altmyer added that his mom, dad, two brothers, and grandparents will be in Cincinnati this week to watch his preseason debut on Thursday night. The former Illini is ready to put on a good showing for his family and fans.

“It’s exactly what I could ever dream of: playing NFL football and getting a lot of opportunities out there on that field. You grew up wanting this. I’m grateful and pleased. I am not going to let it go by. I’m going to take full advantage of it and prepare the right way and be ready for it.”
