Four-star EDGE Ifeanyi Emedobi recaps unofficial visit to Illini: “It was a great visit”
Emedobi is a Fort Wayne, Indiana native who is a top-500 prospect per 247sports in the class of 2027.
Illinois football will be celebrating this weekend as EDGE rusher Gabe Jacas is projected to be a top-100 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Jacas will join some other prominent former Illini defensive linemen in the NFL such as Jer’Zhan Newton and Te’Rah Edwards. The sell is certainly strong on the D-line for the Illini as they are continuing to recruit talented linemen to campus. This past weekend, they hosted four-star EDGE rusher Ifeanyi Emedobi on campus for an unofficial visit. Per 247sports, Emedobi is a top-500 prospect in the class of 2027 and holds offers from Minnesota, Penn State, Notre Dame, and more.
Emedobi, who currently plays for Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, recorded 50 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles this past season. He enjoyed his first visit to Champaign. “It was a great visit. Got to meet the staff and learn about how they do things. My main focus was learning about how they run their defense since they are switching to a different defense this year.”
Bonding with the new Illini defensive staff
The Illini football staff hired Bobby Hauck as defensive coordinator at the conclusion of the 2025 season. Hauck and head coach Bret Bielema brought in a slew of new defensive assistants; however, the offer made by previous coach Trent Harris still stands with Emedobi. ” It was a great visit. Got to meet the staff and learn about how they do things. My main focus was learning about how they run their defense since they are switching to a different defense this year. I have also been in consistent contact with Ben Dessauer (new recruiting personnel assistant at Illinois).”
Emedobi has some top schools on his list, and he plans to officially visit Notre Dame, Penn State, and South Florida. Can the Illini fit in one of the five official visits? “Coming to an official at Illinois is still very possible, especially since I finally got to get on campus and check them out”, Emedobi told Armchair Illini.
