Illini receiver Hank Beatty continues strong play in huge win over Duke
The Rochester, Illinois native is slowly becoming a fan favorite and one of the most important pieces on this Illini team.
No surprise, Hank Beatty has been a household name for Illinois fans because of his electric punt returns. His resume got even more polished in Week 1 against Western Illinois when he broke return records previously held by Red Grange for decades. The Illini faithful know how prestigious it is to be in the same conversation as “The Galloping Ghost”. Beatty’s ability to flip the field has been a game-changer throughout his career.
Now in 2025, Beatty has expanded his impact beyond special teams and developed into a much-needed go-to receiver. With Zakhari Franklin and Pat Bryant off to the NFL, the Illini entered the year desperate for a new WR1. Beatty has answered that call. Through the first two games, he has cleared 100 receiving yards in both contests, totaling 13 catches and ranking second in the Big Ten in both receptions and yards. Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer has leaned on him early and often, trusting his sure hands in key moments.
Beatty’s explosiveness isn’t confined to catching passes, either. In Saturday’s win over Duke, he delivered one of the game’s biggest highlights – a 25-yard touchdown rush on a trick play. Taking a direct snap, he faked a pitch to Altmeyer in motion before darting downhill at full speed, untouched into the end zone, fueling a dominant Illini second half.
From breaking records in the return game to filling the box score on offense, Beatty has proven he can do it all. He’s become the Illini’s Swiss Army knife, and if his hot start continues, he’s on pace to secure All-Big Ten honors by season’s end.
