Illinois football dominates season opener vs Western Illinois
The Illini did exactly what they were supposed to do vs the Leathernecks
It was never really in doubt over in Champaign, Illinois. On a picture-perfect Friday night, Illinois football dominated the Western Illinois Leathernecks 52-3 to start their season off 1-0. No surprises in Champaign as the Illini did exactly what they were supposed to do. They overpowered the Leathernecks on both sides of the ball and looked in control for all sixty minutes. On offense, Luke Altmyer looked calm behind an experienced and seasoned offensive line. Hank Beatty and Ca’lil Valentine were both standout performers, particularly Beatty. Beatty finished the game with 5 receptions for 108 yards. He also ran back a punt return for a 67-yard touchdown. Ball State transfer Justin Bowick caught two touchdowns, certifying his status as the Illini’s red zone threat.
On defense, Gabe Jacas looked like an NFL player playing college football this year. Jacas was a force all night

What’s next?
Illinois football will face a major challenge next week. They will travel to Durham, North Carolina, to play the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, September 6th. That is certainly a step up in competition and a major test for a team with high hopes this season. The Illini cannot get complacent after this win over Western Illinois. They will need to be on their best if they are to pull off a road victory vs Duke next week. The Blue Devils have a great quarterback in Tulane transfer Darian Mensah. Mensah went off for 389 yards and three touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ opening win over Elon.
HANK BEATTY 69-YARD PUNT RETURN FOR THE TD
This is the longest @IlliniFootball punt return touchdown since V’Angelo Bentley (67 yards) vs. Ohio State on 11/16/2013.
