How will the new-look Illini defense perform?

There are not too many questions about the Illinois football offense heading into Week 1. ECU Transfer Katin Houser is expected to continue what Luke Altmyer started in tough, smart, and dependable football. The Illini have a stable of talented and experienced running backs running behind an offensive line expected to be one of the better units in the Big Ten.

However, Bret Bielema took a swing at hiring longtime Montana coach Bobby Hauck. Hauck has a cool, calm, even-keeled persona that honestly is the antithesis of former DC Aaron Henry.  Though Illinois football has some veteran stars in the backfield like Matthew Bailey and Xavier Scott, the front-seven certainly come in with questions. Whether it is mid-major transfers like Darrell Prater or Carter Janki, or former rotation players like Ish Kante and James Kreutz, the Illini are running a lot of new personnel in a new defensive scheme.
