Early thoughts:
After a 9–4 campaign in 2025—capped by an impressive Music City Bowl victory over Tennessee, despite a few frustrating slips along the way—Illinois now enters its next chapter focused on carrying forward the momentum built in recent seasons. The 2026 season will mark Bret Bielema’s sixth year at the helm in Champaign, and following the Illini’s second straight bowl win over an SEC opponent (along with spending much of last fall in the College Football Playoff conversation), the temperature surrounding the program continues to rise at a steady pace.
That said, with three-year starting quarterback Luke Altmyer now headed to the NFL, all eyes turn to whether Bielema’s staff can reload at key positions and continue progressing in the ever-evolving NIL era. Comparable programs, such as Indiana, have recently found ways to take that next step. Now the question becomes: can Illinois, now led by East Carolina transfer Katin Houser, sustain its current momentum and potentially push forward another level?
How Illinois Football maximizes a relatively favorable schedule will be at the forefront of every Illini fan’s mind over the next six months. With that in mind, let’s take a look at who the Fighting Illini will face in 2026.
Which games could be key?
Duke (Week 3)
One of the offseason’s biggest headlines came when Duke quarterback Darian Mensah announced he would be transferring out of the program, spending his junior season at the University of Miami—fresh off a national runner-up finish in the CFP Championship. With several other key pieces also graduating or transferring out, could Manny Diaz’s squad be vulnerable early in the season?
Of course, Illinois Football will feature several new faces as well, including at quarterback. However, considering Katin Houser’s prior experience and the fact that the Illini will have home-field advantage, I like how this matchup shapes up early for Illinois.
at Ohio State (Week 4)
Certainly, not an easy opener to the Illini’s conference schedule by any means. After getting trampled 63-10 by Curt Cignetti’s Indiana team to kick off the 2025 Big Ten slate last season, it’s crucial that Illinois not begin conference play having dug itself into another mental hole in 2026. Bielema’s crew will certainly be in for a really tough one in front of 102,000 in Columbus. That said, the Illini must find a way to compete and find positives. If the Illini could pull it off and bring the Illibuck back to Champaign, it would be the first time since Juice Williams and the Illini snuck one away from the top-ranked Buckeyes back in 2007.
Nebraska (Week 10)
How does Matt Rhule’s program respond after a significant offseason overhaul following a 7–5 campaign in 2025, headlined by starting quarterback Dylan Raiola transferring to Oregon?
I see this as a key opportunity for Illinois at home to build late-season momentum during what shapes up as a very opportunistic final five-game stretch on the 2026 schedule.
