Illinois Football: Three wide receivers that will step up amidst recent injuries
Illinois football has 9 days until kickoff vs UAB.
There are fewer than 10 days until Illinois Football kicks off the 2026 season vs the UAB Blazers. Unfortunately, they have been hit with a string of injuries to their wide receiver room, a room that initially seemed to be filled with a lot of intriguing pieces. FIU transfer Alex Perry brought in a lot of veteran experience with a 6-foot-5-inch frame; however, he came in with an injury that will keep him out of the 2026 season. Just today, Illinois football head coach Bret Bielema announced that Florida Atlantic transfer Jayshon Platt will likely miss the season opener, and there is no current timetable set for a return.
Platt may be one of the most significant injuries of the summer as he was expected to be a stalwart in the wide receiver room alongside veterans Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement. Platt brought next-level speed and was garnering a lot of hype as a playmaker throughout the entire offseason.
Bielema shared that “Whether he is back in Week 1 or Week 3 or Week 4, I don’t really know at this point.”
That surely sounds grim; however, the Illini now look to these three young receivers to step up
Brayden Trimble
The obvious answer to start in Platt’s absence is sophomore wide receiver Brayden Trimble. Trimble chose the Illini over a slew of Power Five offers and was impressive in practice dating all the way back to last season. Even before Perry and Platt were announced to have significant injuries, wide receivers coach Justin Stepp was immensely high on Trimble’s abilities.
Right now, Trimble is the clear WR3 for Illinois football. He should receive a majority of the reps that Jayshon Platt was expected to have.
Nate Cichy
Another receiver who has gained significant buzz throughout training camp is freshman wide receiver Nate Cichy. Cichy was initially a Harvard commit before flipping to his home state school. Though he may have a smaller frame, Cichy has shown reliable hands and exceptional route-running ability, putting himself in a position to contribute. The Mount Prospect, Illinois native ran Track and field in high school while also being an incredibly productive football player
Illinois coaches and quarterback Katin Houser have even praised Cichy’s work ethic and talents. Simply put, it is very impressive for a young true freshman to gain praise from a fifth-year All-Big Ten type quarterback. If Cichy continues his strong play, he should certainly get reps with the current injuries
Kenyon Alston
Three-star wideout Kenyon Alston is one of the more intriguing options amongst the crew of young freshmen receivers. Alston has a solid 6-foot-2-inch frame and exceptional hands, hence drawing comparisons to former Illini great Pat Bryant. Alston had plenty of offers from Power Five programs, including a late push from Michigan. However, he stayed true to his commitment to Illinois Football.
Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement are proven veterans who can do it all on the field. If Alston can be a red-zone target like how Justin Bowick was last year, he should immediately see some reps on the field come game day.
