Luke Altmyer created a legacy in Champaign: Bret Bielema Reflects
Luke Altmyer is heading into his final two games as an Illini. The end of an era.
It’s almost hard to believe that Saturday’s Land of Lincoln showdown versus Northwestern will mark Luke Altmyer’s final game at the helm of the Illinois offense. As he prepares for that one last ride at Memorial Stadium, a time for reflection upon his young career is certainly more than deserved.
Luke’s three-year arc has shaped a legacy that will stand alongside the best quarterbacks to ever wear orange and blue. He arrived from Ole Miss as a young gunslinger and former high-profile prep recruit, willing to leave the SEC comfort zone he grew up in, and over time, came to embody the tough, smart, and dependable player that coach Bret Bielema wants his program to represent. Of course, his growth wasn’t about on-field production alone—but also his maturity, resilience in the face of struggles, and belief in what this program could be under the right leader.
Altmyer leaned on his faith, his coaching staff, and his teammates through the highs and lows, and eventually developed into the steady, reliable player that the program had long been searching for in a multi-year starter, at the sport’s most demanding position. Following the one-season spark of Tommy DeVito’s 8-4 run to the ReliaQuest Bowl in 2023, Luke’s presence became the bridge that helped lay the foundation for sustained success at Illinois.
For coach Bielema, the moment feels surreal as he reflects on the journey of his senior quarterback. The Illini head coach has been open about how much Luke Altmyer has meant to the culture of the Illinois Football program, and as he looked back this week, Bielema emphasized the impact Luke’s presence has had on his tenure in Champaign.

Bret Bielema on Luke Altmyer’s Legacy at Illinois
“Well, I think Luke— even just talking to him and his mom and dad—the first time they came and dropped him off….. I mean, it was cold in January, and they were like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m dropping my boy from Mississippi right here in the middle of Illinois and we’ll see what happens.’ And then, Luke is embraced everywhere I go,” stated Bielema.
“Including my house, right? I see Luke Altmyer’s gear. My wife and daughters are wearing his sweatshirts, the t-shirts.”
He continued, “He’s made an impact on our community. He’s very likable. I think he’s identifiable with our fan base. I’ve said all along, right, like we’re going to build this program from within with Illinois players. So we have over 50 Illinois kids that’ll play in his game, which means a lot, right? But even when we go to Mississippi, when we go to Florida, when we go to New Jersey, we look for Illinois-type kids. And I think even though Luke is a proud young man from the state of Mississippi, I think he considers himself an Illinois player. And that’s what’s really fun.”
Bielema later shifted from Altmyer’s personal impact to the on-field strides he’s made as Illinois’ quarterback, highlighting the tangible growth that has caught NFL eyes.
“There’s no doubt in my mind Luke Altmyer’s improved his draft grade.”
