The Illinois Football staff has found its quarterback in the 2027 class. Three-star Mississippi gunslinger Sladen Shack announced his commitment to Bret Bielema and Illinois following an official visit to Champaign over the weekend. Slack is the fourth commitment to the class of 2027 in the past 4 days.

He joins offensive lineman Gavin Ericson-Staton, tight end Cade Newman, and edge rusher Ryan Paulsen as the most recent commits. The recent wave of commitments has pushed the Illini’s 2027 class to 8 total verbal pledges, which, according to 247 Sports, ranks 60th nationally.

247Sports also lists Sladen as the No. 101 quarterback in the 2027 class and the 37th overall prospect in the talent-rich state of Mississippi.

The battle for his commitment seemingly came down to Illinois, Oklahoma State, and the Ole Miss Rebels. However, despite entering the mix relatively late with an offer in early May, quarterbacks coach Art Sitkowski was able to get Shack on campus and ultimately close the deal.

So, did Sitkowski find the Illini’s next star quarterback in Luke Altmyer’s backyard? There’s certainly intrigue to how quickly he and the rest of the Illinois staff wanted to lock Sladen Shack down.

What Sladen Shack Means for Illinois Football’s QB Unit in 2027 and Beyond

After losing Salt Lake City quarterback Kamden Lopati earlier in the cycle to Michigan, Illinois wasted little time pivoting to Sladen Shack. While losing a top-tier quarterback prospect is never ideal, the staff deserves credit for how quickly they regrouped and identified another player they believed in.

The Brandon, Mississippi native first broke onto the radar with a standout sophomore season in 2024. Slack led Brandon High School to a Class 7A state runner-up finish. He completed 193-of-299 passes (64.5%) for 2,586 yards and 24 touchdowns, to just six interceptions. That season helped Slack establish himself as one of the more intriguing young quarterbacks in the state of Mississippi.

Then, an injury during Week 3 of this past season against Starkville High School (Luke Altmyer’s Alma Mater) temporarily slowed his momentum, sidelining him for several weeks during the middle of his Junior campaign. However, he returned late in the year with a strong finish and enters his senior season fully healthy with a chance to elevate himself.

From a skill-set standpoint, it’s easy to see why Illinois likes him. Shack brings a really strong and accurate arm. He’s decisive and confident and has the kind of arm talent that fits well in an offense like Barry Lunney Jr’s.

A Solid Group of Young Talent.

By the time he arrives in Champaign, he’ll join a quarterback room that continues to develop young talent behind current starter Katin Houser.

Players like Carson Boyd and  Michael Clayton II are already being molded within the system, giving Illinois a foundation of youth at the position. That said, in today’s transfer portal and NIL era, quarterback rooms are constantly changing and evolving. Slack will have time to develop, learn the offense, and potentially compete for the job when the opportunity arises.

Considering how quickly Sitkowski and the Illini staff identified, prioritized, and closed this recruitment, it’s clear they believe they may have found their guy for the future.
