Why Mac Resetich is bound to breakout for Illinois Football
Can the rising junior out of Spring Valley, Illinois find a way to shine in a very deep defensive backfield?
There’s no shortage of returning star power on Illinois’ defense in 2025 with names like Gabe Jacas and Xavier Scott headlining the unit. But one under-the-radar player could be poised for a breakout year: junior defensive back Mac Resetich.
Resetich appeared in every game last season and made his presence felt with a start against Michigan State, where he tallied 7 total tackles (5 solo). He capped the year with a statement play in the Cheez-It Bowl, recording a key sack against South Carolina.
With a multi-sport background and elite athleticism, Resetich has been turning heads in camp. His football IQ and relentless work ethic earned him All-Academic Big Ten honors in 2024, and now the coaching staff believes his physical tools have caught up to his discipline.
As Illinois looks to build one of the Big Ten’s most complete defenses, Mac Resetich has a clear path to expanded playing time and potentially a leadership role in the secondary. Sporting a new jersey with No. 0, a number often reserved for versatile playmakers and tone-setters, don’t be surprised if he’s one of the names Illini fans are talking about most by season’s end.
