Illinois Football lands commitment of three-star QB Owen Herrick

Illinois football has its first commitment in the class of 2028! Three-star QB Owen Herrick announced on his social media pages that he is committing to the Illini over offers from Minnesota, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and more. Per 247Sports, Herrick is the 29th-ranked quarterback in the class of 2028 and is the number 419 overall prospect in the composite rankings. During his junior season thus far, Herrick has completed over 70 percent of his passes, totaling 443 yards and five touchdowns.

This is yet another great recruiting win for QB coach Art Sitkowski. Sitkowski was vital in bringing on four-star OL Kai Pritchard and Miami QB Michael Clayton II. Sitkowski was also vital in landing four-star QB Kamden Lopati before he ultimately flipped his commitment to Michigan.

How he fits

Herrick is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with strong footwork and fundamentals. Though he is not a traditional dual-threat quarterback, he shows above-average athleticism and can prolong plays with his legs. Like 2027 commit Sladen Shack, Herrick is a very competitive quarterback with strong velocity on his throws.

After current QB Katin Houser graduates, Illinois football will certainly be looking at some young options at QB. Though attrition is inevitable, the Illini have a stable of young QBs, including Carson Boyd, Michael Clayton II, Sladen Shack, and now Owen Herrick
