Illinois Football Releases Week 4 Injury Report Ahead of Ohio State
The good news and the bad news for Illinois Football heading to Columbus…..
Illinois Football opens Big Ten play Saturday morning in Columbus (OH), where the Fighting Illini will face No. 7 Ohio State (11 a.m. CT) in the program’s first road test of the season at the Horseshoe. It’s a daunting road trip, but also an excellent opportunity for coach Bret Bielema’s crew to take their shot, against all odds, against the toughest team on their schedule all season. Notably, the Big Ten released its first midweek availability reports of the 2026 season Wednesday night under the conference’s new four-report weekly policy. The report gives us a transparent look at where Illinois Football stands heading into Big Ten play.
Of course, this matchup makes having all hands on deck particularly important. Luckily, Illinois injury report appears to be trending toward having several players closer to returning, which could give the Illini some much-needed depth. That said, several of those players are still working their way back.
So, while the injury report is trending in a more positive direction, there is still plenty to monitor before kickoff. The good news and bad news for Illinois Football heading into Columbus?
The Bad News: Jayshon Platt Remains Out For Now
The biggest concern on the latest report is FAU transfer WR Jayshon Platt, who remains doubtful heading into Saturday. Platt was expected to be an important part of Illinois’ receiving corps this season, making his continued absence notable as the Illini prepare to face an Ohio State defense loaded with NFL talent.
Still, Illinois has found a way to keep its passing game moving without him. Quarterback Katin Houser has been one of the team’s biggest positives through three games, throwing for 758 yards and 8 touchdowns, creating a deadly connection with senior wideout Collin Dixon. Dixon has already snagged 25 catches for 367 yards and 7 touchdowns thus far, giving Illinois a legitimate explosive threat on the outside.
The concern now becomes whether Illinois can make the Buckeyes pay elsewhere.
Hudson Clement and Brayden Trimble have both shown flashes through the first three games, but Saturday is a great opportunity for one of them to turn that into a larger role. The same can be said for tight ends like Kaden Feagin, Davin Stoffel, and Christian Abney, who become increasingly important as Illinois looks to find more ways to distribute the offense without relying too heavily on Houser and Dixon’s connection.
Platt’s continued absence is certainly significant. The Illini have shown they can overcome it, but doing so against Matt Patricia’s defense will require more players to contribute.
The Good News: Illinois Could Get Some Key Pieces Back
The biggest source of encouragement may be along Bart Miller’s offensive line. A group that has certainly dealt with some significant adversity early on. The unit lost TJ McMillen for the season after his foot injury against Duke, while Brandon Henderson, Maika Matelau and Dezmond Schuster have all been working their way back. Even if those three are not quite ready for Ohio State, knowing Illinois could have the trio back early in Big Ten play is highly encouraging. The staff could still surprise us Saturday… But, having those pieces available for Homecoming versus Purdue would be a major boost. Especially for a front five that will need some consistency as conference play continues.
Illinois could also get sophomore DB Tywan Cox back this week. Cox’s return adds another anticipated young piece to Illinois’ already talented secondary. Of course, that depth becomes increasingly valuable once Big Ten play begins, especially with Illinois preparing to face a much higher level of competition week after week.
Then there’s Daniel Brown, whose likely return this week could be especially important for a linebacker group that has struggled at times through the first three games of the season. The former JUCO All-American brings the ability to make plays from the second level while also providing another disruptive option as a blitzer off the edge. This would be Brown’s first game back, so expecting him to immediately play a full workload may be unrealistic. However, simply getting him back into the rotation is significant, as he’s got the chance to become a heavy contributor for an Illinois moving forward.
