Breaking: Illinois Football Offensive Lineman TJ McMillen Out For the Season

Illinois Football has suffered another significant blow to its already very banged-up offensive line.

Head Coach Bret Bielema confirmed Monday that offensive lineman TJ McMillen will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering a fracture in his foot during Saturday’s 31-27 loss to Duke. Now, offensive line coach Bart Miller will have to dig deep into his already thin rotation as the Illini turn their attention toward the SIU Salukis in Week 3.

The timing is certainly unfortunate for McMillen, who had just earned an opportunity to step into the starting lineup. With Brandon Henderson and Maika Matelau unavailable, McMillen made his second career start against Duke and played really well for the situation he was in. His ability to play both guard and center also gave Illinois highly valuable flexibility up front in the interior, making his loss another challenge for a unit that has already dealt with several injuries during the opening weeks of the season.

Bielema spoke with the media on Monday, with the Duke loss now behind them, and addressed McMillen’s injury, as well as the challenge ahead for his offensive line unit, as Illinois Football now has just one more game against SIU to find some stability before Big Ten play opens at Ohio State.

The bigger question now is what Illinois’ interior offensive line looks like moving forward, with Brandon Henderson and Maika Matelau still in limbo. Of course, that means big shoes to fill for Dez’ Schuster, who stepped in for McMillen on Saturday after he went down. With McMillen now out for the season, in addition to Henderson and Matelau’s status remaining uncertain, the Illini will have to lean on that depth sooner than expected.

Bielema reflected on what McMillen’s loss means looking ahead.

“Obviously, TJ left in the middle of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, we did lose him for the year. He suffered a fracture in his foot, and the timing of that won’t allow him to return this year.”

I couldn’t be prouder of that kid. Since we recruited him, he’s been an extremely gritty, tough kid who has been super impressive. Last year, he popped into the Purdue game for a first-time start, which is the case with most of our guys. He was getting his first opportunity this year because of Henderson’s injury, and I thought he really maximized that moment. He played extremely well. I’m super excited about him and his future. Unfortunately, that’s going to be done for him this year. 

So obviously, he’s going to leave a hole on the offensive line at a position that’s already been a little bit banged up. There’s a chance some of these guys who didn’t play last week could return. It’ll be determined midweek or so. But, I think we’re getting healthier rather than going the other direction. Obviously, TJ’s loss hurts because he does have value at center and guard. But I’m just extremely disappointed for the kid. He’s worked really hard to get where he is, but obviously, he’s got a couple of years of football left in front of him. So, we’ll see where that goes.”
