Illinois Basketball Recruiting: Biggest Needs for the Illini’s 2027 Recruiting Class

Illinois basketball currently has two commits in their class of 2027

It’s never too early to think about the next Illinois basketball recruiting class.

Rosters turn over faster than ever, NBA Draft decisions come earlier, and programs that want sustained success have to recruit years ahead. That’s exactly where Illinois finds itself now.

Brad Underwood and his staff have already built a strong early foundation for the 2027 class, securing commitments from in-state wings Mason Martin and Quinton Kitt — two prospects whose stock has climbed into consensus four-star territory.

But for Illinois, this feels like the beginning, not the finish. The Illini have moved past simply building the foundation of this class. Now comes the harder part: finding the high-end pieces that complete it. As the summer of 2026 rolls on, Illinois once again finds itself battling some of college basketball’s biggest brands for elite talent.

The biggest question begins in the backcourt. Stefan Vaaks and Quentin Coleman both possess legitimate NBA upside, and if their development continues on its current path, Illinois could be replacing two starting-caliber guards in the same offseason.

Lead Guard

One fascinating wrinkle remains five-star point guard Brady Pettigrew, who is currently in the 2028 class but continues to generate speculation about a possible reclassification into 2027.

If that happens — and Illinois wins that recruitment — the entire outlook of this class changes. Even if Pettigrew stays put, Illinois still likely needs another dynamic playmaker. Underwood’s best teams have consistently been built around guards who can create offense, make winning decisions, and control games late.

A Frontcourt piece

The frontcourt presents another major question. By the time this class arrives, both Tomislav Ivisic and Zvonimir Ivisic are expected to move on, creating an obvious need for size. The biggest wildcard may be David Mirkovic.

Some early NBA mock drafts already project Mirkovic as a potential late first-round pick, while others believe another season in Champaign could raise his stock even more.

Either way, Illinois has to recruit as though another frontcourt addition may eventually be necessary. Then comes the one thing every elite program constantly chases.

A scoring wing

Illinois already has two talented wings committed in Martin and Kitt, but modern basketball demands an abundance of perimeter players who can create their own shot, stretch the floor, and defend multiple positions.

That may explain one of Illinois’ more intriguing recruiting moves this summer.

Last weekend, the Illini became the first high-major program to offer 2027 wing Jayon Connor. Within days, several other power-conference programs followed, reinforcing the trust Underwood’s staff has developed in identifying talent before the rest of the country catches up.

The encouraging part for Illinois is this: recruiting no longer feels like the program’s only path to roster building. The Illini have shown they now have the financial backing to compete for major names in the transfer portal while also aggressively expanding overseas, giving the staff multiple avenues to fill future roster gaps if recruiting battles don’t break their way.

A few years ago, Illinois was trying to convince elite recruits it could develop NBA talent. Today, Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball is building classes around replacing it — while also having the resources to go find proven talent elsewhere.

That’s a much better problem to have.
