Illinois Football Lands 2027 Edge Rusher Ryan Paulsen
Illinois Football steals anther one away from Iowa State.
Another day, another win for Illinois Football in the Hawkeye State. Early Monday afternoon, DeWitt (IA) edge rusher Ryan Paulsen announced his commitment to the Illini.
Paulsen, the 12th-ranked player in the state of Iowa, becomes the seventh verbal commit in the class of 2027. That stretch includes a strong run of Midwest recruiting victories (particularly over Iowa State) in the past 48 hours, with Paulsen joining Ankeny (IA) tight end Cade Newman and Montini Catholic (IL) offensive lineman, Iowa State flip, Gavin Ericson-Staton. Paulsen gives Illinois its 5th in-state commitment of the class.
According to 247Sports, Ryan’s commitment bumps Illinois’ 2027 class up to No. 59 nationally in the team recruiting rankings. While rankings in a smaller class are far from the main story, it can reflect momentum, which Bret Bielema’s staff is currently executing with a string of recent on-campus visits.

What Ryan Paulsen Means for Illinois Football in 2027 and Beyond
Paulsen held a strong offer list that included Iowa State, Mizzou, Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and more. However, new defensive line coaches Jordan Thomas and Mike Linehan were able to close the deal once Paulsen got to campus. Notably, Illinois was his first Power 4 offer. The fact that Illinois football was in early on him and still able to close despite growing Power 4 interest from other programs is a strong reflection of this staff’s ability to identify and evaluate talent before the rest of the market fully catches on. It is also a sign that they have deep-rooted relationships with high school staff members across the country.
On the field, the All-State EDGE rusher showed strong production for Dewitt Central, totaling 40 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks, in addition to a forced fumble as a junior. He now becomes one of the early building blocks for new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck, joining St. Laurence (IL) linebacker Sean Rice and Evanston (IL) CB Justin Johnson as foundational pieces in the class.
Hauck is expected to build out a more aggressive, disruptive front in his 3-3-5 system, and early commits like Paulsen give Illinois a strong developmental base to work from up front. With some work, the Iowa native possesses the abilities to develop his way into the mix early in his career after a season or two of development in Champaign.
