Illinois Football 2027 Commit Sean Rice Receives High National Praise
Why Tom Lemming believes 2027 pledge Sean Rice is a “Big catch” for DC Bobby Hauck, and the Fighting Illini Defense.

3-star Chicago St. Laurence linebacker Sean Rice recently announced his decision on May 15th to stay home and join Bret Bielema and the Fighting Illini. Rice is the first defensive commitment for new Illinois football defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck in the class of 2027. His decision to stay home drew strong praise from one of college football recruiting’s most respected voices, as longtime recruiting analyst and CBS Sports co-host Tom Lemming had plenty of positive things to say after catching up with the Illini’s most recent prep addition.
Blessed to announce my commitment to Illinois!

Notably, Rice became the fourth member of Illinois’ 2027 class, joining fellow in-state pledges Mason Halliman (Frankfort), Soren Fifer (Morton), and Justin Johnson (Evanston), to form an early foundation for the Illini that is entirely homegrown thus far.
Certainly, Rice is another solid in-state win for Illinois.
The Evergreen Park (IL) native already has the type of production, size, and rare athleticism in his 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame that naturally stands out. During the 2025 season, Rice posted 123 tackles and four interceptions while showing the kind of versatility that pops quickly on film.
247 Sports currently ranks Sean as the No. 72 linebacker nationally and the 30th overall prospect in the state of Illinois in the 2027 class. According to CBS’s Tom Lemming, he believes Illinois snagged a “Premier Player” in Rice.
Why Lemming Believes Illinois got a “Premier Player” in Sean Rice
“Sean Rice (6’2″ 220, Chicago St. Laurence linebacker) is a premier player with exceptional instincts and speed to the ball. Terrific all-around athlete and a big catch for the Illini of Illinois.”
The word that probably stands out most there is instincts... Illinois football has built much of its recent defensive identity in the new 3-3-5 system around linebackers who process quickly and play fast, and Rice certainly looks the part. He looks like the type of linebacker on film who can wear multiple hats, and early national evaluations suggest Illinois may have landed another versatile defensive piece with plenty of room still left to develop in the years ahead.
