Illinois Football to Host Division II All-American Edge Rusher
Can Illinois Football add this dynamic pass rusher to their defensive line?
Illinois Football continues to poke around for potential help on the defensive front, and a new name has surfaced on the radar.
According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, Emory & Henry (D2) transfer edge rusher Ean Rhea is planning a visit to Champaign on Thursday, May 21st, as Bret Bielema and the Illini staff continue evaluating defensive front options. Rhea has already generated interest from programs such as Vanderbilt and LSU; that said, the Illini appear to be stepping into a recruitment that is really picking up steam.
Emory and Henry edge rusher Ean Rhea plans to visit Illinois, @thebizofathlete tells @mzenitz and me.
The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder posted 18 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and three forced fumbles last season. He’s also visited Vanderbilt and LSU.https://t.co/djTEsDT66y pic.twitter.com/MpHRVyHG1j

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound edge defender put together a monster season at the Division II level in 2025, earning South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors and Division II First Team All-American recognition after totaling 50 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, in addition to 3 forced fumbles. Across the last two seasons, he’s built a reputation as a productive backfield disruptor, using strong instincts and finishing athleticism to consistently find his way home.
From an Illinois perspective, the fit makes sense. Despite being unproven at the Division 1 level, he undoubtedly possesses a frame and the proven production that translates well to the Big Ten level. Rhea is certainly capable of developing into a disruptive rotational pass rusher. Experience and production are exactly what Bobby Hauck’s defense needs at this time.
Can the Illinois Football staff lock him down?
