If there was one takeaway from Keaton Wagler and his NBA Summer League debut, it was this: don’t overreact.

The former Illini star struggled in his first game with the Los Angeles Clippers, finishing with seven points on 1-for-7 shooting while looking like a rookie adjusting to the speed and physicality of the NBA game. Some were already questioning whether the No. 5 overall pick had been drafted too high.

Three days later, Wagler reminded everyone why the Clippers believed in him.

Facing fellow top-five pick Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz, Wagler delivered a breakout performance in a 104-82 Clippers victory. He poured in 23 points, knocked down 4 of his 7 three-point attempts, dished out four assists, and added a steal while looking every bit like the dynamic playmaker Illinois fans watched dominate college basketball.

After the game, Clippers Summer League coach Jay Larranaga was asked what adjustments the coaching staff made to help free up Wagler offensively.

Larranaga didn’t see it that way.

Instead, he shared a message that resonated with the entire team after Thursday’s loss—a text from his wife that simply read: “Stay deaf to the negativity and focus on the goal.”

That’s exactly what Keaton Wagler appeared to do.

More importantly, he looked comfortable. The game slowed down. Instead of forcing the action as he did against Sacramento, Wagler played with the poise and confidence that made him one of the nation’s best guards last season. He attacked when opportunities presented themselves, created shots within the flow of the offense and let his shooting ability take over.

It was exactly the type of response you’d expect from a player who built his reputation on bouncing back.

The matchup also carried extra intrigue because it featured two of the top five selections in June’s NBA Draft. Peterson, the No. 2 overall pick, entered the game after an impressive Summer League debut of his own. But on Sunday night, it was Wagler who stole the spotlight.

Of course, one Summer League game doesn’t erase another. There will still be growing pains as Wagler adjusts to NBA defenses, stronger athletes and a faster pace. That’s expected for any rookie point guard.

But Sunday’s performance was an important reminder that development isn’t always linear. One rough debut doesn’t define a prospect any more than one breakout game guarantees stardom.

What it did show is why the Clippers were comfortable making Wagler the No. 5 overall pick. And for those who started questioning that decision after one Summer League game, Wagler’s response may have been the best answer he could have given.
