Stefan Vaaks Has No Regrets Leaving Providence for Illinois
Vaaks was referring to an opening statement at Bryan Hodgson’s introductory press conference at Providence.
Stefan Vaaks probably didn’t realize his introduction to the Champaign-Urbana Kiwanis Club was going to turn into a little bit of a Providence roast. But the Illinois sophomore had a pretty good story to tell.
After Kim English was fired following the 2025-26 season, Providence hired Bryan Hodgson as its new head coach. Vaaks, meanwhile, entered the transfer portal and eventually landed with Brad Underwood and the Illini.
According to Stefan Vaaks, Hodgson had a warning for him. “The new coach at Providence told me I’ll regret it if I leave Providence,” Vaaks said. “Man, I don’t regret it.”
Fair enough.
It’s especially interesting considering how the Friars’ season played out. Providence finished just 15-18 overall and 7-13 in Big East play, landing in seventh place in the conference. Vaaks was one of the bright spots, averaging 15.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game as a freshman.
Now he gets a fresh start in Champaign. And there’s plenty to like about what Illinois is getting.
Vaaks proved he can produce at the college level, and his scoring ability gives Underwood another weapon in a backcourt built to play fast and put pressure on opposing defenses.
There’s obviously a long way to go before anyone knows exactly how Vaaks’ Illinois career will play out. But if his introduction to the Kiwanis Club is any indication, he is already enjoying his time in Champaign. And honestly, that’s probably exactly how Underwood wants him to feel.
