Illinois Football Vs Duke: 3 Blue Devils to Watch Out For

Illinois Football got the job done against UAB to open the 2026 season with a win. However, the 42-23 victory over the Blazers gave Illini things to work on.

The Illini have plenty of new faces still getting comfortable in their roles. The Illini struggled to consistently stop the run, showed some growing pains up front on both sides of the ball, and had a poor first half of tackling, which, of course, are areas that will be tested much more against Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils.

At the same time, Illinois saw plenty of positives. Offensively, aside from racking up 42 points, Barry Lunney Jr.’s unit showed promise with ECU transfer Katin Houser. The veteran QB threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores to senior wideout Collin Dixon, who finished with a career day vs UAB. On the other side, Bobby Hauck’s 3-3-5 defense eventually settled in after UAB found some early success on the ground, with the Illini front six looking more comfortable and becoming more disruptive as the game progressed into the second half. Certainly, it’s an encouraging sign as a unit heavily reliant on its NFL-talent-heavy secondary can potentially begin to gain some momentum on the line of scrimmage to provide some relief on the back end.

That said, there is plenty for Illinois Football to build on, and the margin for error gets much smaller in Week 2.

Coach Manny Diaz’ crew is coming to Champaign with plenty of confidence and, undoubtedly, some extra motivation after what happened last year. Bret Bielema’s crew dominated the Blue Devils 45-19 in Durham, with Luke Altmyer and the Illinois offense putting together one of their best performances of the season.

From there, Duke, led by current Miami starting quarterback Darian Mensah, responded with a strong finish to 2025, winning the ACC Championship and the Sun Bowl to finish 9-5. Illinois also ended its season with 9 wins and a bowl victory over Tennessee, giving both programs momentum heading into 2026 despite significant turnover, including both programs’ star quarterbacks.

For both Illinois Football and Duke, this will be the first real test of how quickly all those new pieces can come together.

Looking ahead to Saturday, these are three Duke players Illinois fans need to watch out for as the Blue Devils come to Champaign for a SOLD-OUT 2:30 p.m. CT (FS1) kickoff.

RB Nate Sheppard: Can Illinois Football Stall a 1,000+ Yard Freshman All-American?

Running back Nate Sheppard is the top name for Illini fans to keep an eye on. The sophomore broke out as a true freshman in 2025, rushing for 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns while also tacking on 286 receiving yards. Impressively, he earned second-team All-ACC honors, in addition to being dubbed a Freshman All-American by the Athletic. Despite being one of the youngest rushers in the league, he’s undoubtedly one of the more dangerous. 

In week one, he picked up right where he left off in Duke’s opener. Sheppard had 35 carries for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Sheppard had 139 yards in the first half alone and gave the Blue Devils exactly what they needed to control the game on the ground.

That makes him a particularly concerning matchup for Illinois, considering UAB’s success running the ball in Week 1. The Illini had issues with gap fits and tackling early, and Sheppard has already shown he can handle a heavy workload. Duke will likely try to make him the centerpiece again, forcing Illinois’ 3-3-5 to consistently win at the point of attack. If it can’t, Sheppard could wear down the defense and keep Houser and the Illini offense on the sideline…

If Sheppard is allowed to run wild, this game is going to have a very different result than 2025.

TE Jeremiah Hasley

Another Blue Devil to watch is TE Jeremiah Hasley. The big tight end is arguably Duke’s most experienced matchup problem. The veteran tight end caught 40 passes for 454 yards and six touchdowns a year ago for Duke. Hasley enters this season as one of the Blue Devils’ most important returning offensive pieces for San Jose State transfer QB Walker Eget.

Hasley had a bit of a light game vs Tulane, catching two passes for 36 yards. That said, he’s probably due for targets vs the Illini. Duke’s offense likely wasn’t willing to show all their cards in a controlled week one game. Plus, Eget will want to get one of his most reliable targets the ball when it matters most…

Notably, the Illini had inconsistent linebacker play against UAB. The Illini will need players like Mason Muragin, James Kreutz, Ismael Kante, and others to be sharper on all facets against veteran playmakers like Hasley.

If the Illini linebackers can’t consistently handle their assignments, Hasley could find room over the middle and make life very difficult for a defense already trying to keep Sheppard under control.

DE Bryce Davis: Can Illinois Rebuilt O-Line Keep Duke’s Elite Pass Rusher Off Katin Houser?

If there is one Duke defender who could make life very difficult for Katin Houser, it’s Bryce Davis. The sophomore defensive end was a four-star recruit before arriving in Durham. He was able to have a highly productive freshman year for the Blue Devils. During the 2025 season, Davis racked up 10 tackles (2 TFL), a PBU, and 12 QB pressures. 

However, he had a breakout in the Blue Devils’ 2026 home opener vs Tulane. Davis recorded six tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks against the Green Wave, helping Duke hold Tulane to a mere 54 yards rushing. His ability to win off the edge will be especially important against an Illinois offensive line still working through its early-season growing pains, as a unit with several new pieces.

The Illini also have to account for Brandon Henderson’s injury. The RG’s absence shakes up the rotation and puts even more responsibility on TJ McMillen. McMillen is a strong option, but he’s being asked to step up into a major role. That could create opportunities for Davis, particularly if Illinois has any protection breakdowns or struggles to establish a rhythm up front.

If Illinois’ offense has struggles up front, this guy will likely be the center of the problems.
