Why Illinois Basketball will miss Ty Rodgers
The junior forward’s hustle will be missed.
Illinois basketball forward, Ty Rodgers, is expected to redshirt the entire 2024-2025 season. The news came as a shock as Rodgers is one of just two returning players to a roster that features 11 newcomers. Additionally, Ty started all games last year on the team that went to the Elite Eight. Though Rodgers is part of a crowded, talented wing group, it is a loss for the Illini. All of the newcomers are extremely talented, including five-star freshman Will Riley. However, there really is not a player that does what Ty Rodgers can do. Despite his limitations and weaknesses, Illinois basketball will miss Ty’s presence.
Rebounding and Toughness
This team needs rebounding help. Outside of true freshman, Morez Johnson, there are not many on this team that are above-average rebounders at their position. In the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, Ty Rodgers averaged 9.3 rebounds per game. Within that number includes a game in which Rodgers only played 17 minutes due to foul trouble. Even in limited action, Ty was able to grab five rebounds. During the 6-game stretch that Terrence Shannon Jr. was suspended, Ty went on to average a solid 10.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.
Look, Rodgers was limited offensively and did not space the floor very well. However, I do question the toughness and hustle of this team. Rodgers would have certainly been able to provide plenty of that.
