Illini in the Olympics
Former Illini Tennis Player, Rajeev Ram, has won an Olympic Silver Medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Ram and his partner, Austin Krajicek, fell in the Gold medal game in two tight sets vs Australians, Matthew Ebden and John Peers. Despite not getting the gold, Ram and Krajicek had an impressive run. They beat the popular duo, Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal, in the quarterfinals and practically dominated en route to the Gold Medal game. This is Ram’s second Silver medal in his life as he also won the Silver in the 2016 Mixed doubles competition.
The former Illini also won some hardware back during his time in Champaign. In 2003, Ram and the Illini tennis team won the NCAA national championship. On top of that, he also won a doubles title, made All-Big Ten First team, and Freshman of the year. To say the least, Rajeev Ram has had a pretty storied career. He has successfully represented the Illini at the Olympics and on the pro-tennis circuit as a top-flight doubles player. Even as the former Illini has turned 40 years old, he is still playing world-class tennis.
