Illinois basketball adds one last non-conference game vs Western Kentucky
The Illinois basketball non-conference slate appears to be set.
For months, there was speculation that Illinois basketball was saving one final spot on its 2026-27 schedule for a heavyweight.
Kansas. Kentucky. Florida.
Instead, the Illini will close out their non-conference schedule against Western Kentucky.
It’s not the blockbuster announcement many fans were hoping for, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad addition.
The Hilltoppers finished 18-14 last season under head coach Hank Plona and placed third in Conference USA with an 11-9 league record. They were solid on the offensive end, averaging nearly 80 points per game, but struggled to consistently get stops, finishing outside the top 150 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
On paper, it’s a game Illinois should obviously win. That said, it’s also another opportunity for the Illini to continue building what is already one of the nation’s strongest non-conference résumés.
Brad Underwood certainly didn’t shy away from scheduling challenges. Illinois will face Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, UConn in Chicago, North Carolina in Madison Square Garden, Texas Tech and longtime rival Missouri before Big Ten play even begins. There aren’t many programs willing to stack that many high-level games into one non-conference slate.
Perhaps that’s why a matchup with Western Kentucky ultimately makes sense.
Adding another national contender may have looked great from a fan’s perspective, but it also would have created a schedule with very little margin for error. Every team needs a game or two that allows for player development, lineup experimentation and a chance to build confidence before conference play begins.
Western Kentucky still presents enough offensive firepower to demand Illinois’ attention, but it’s also a game the Illini should control if they’re truly a preseason top-15 team.
Will fans be disappointed that the mystery opponent wasn’t Kansas, Kentucky or the defending national champion Gators? Probably.
But when viewed alongside the rest of Illinois’ non-conference schedule, it’s difficult to argue that Underwood backed away from a challenge. In light of the David Mirkovic news, perhaps it’s better that Illinois has a few games that allow them to build chemistry on their home floor.
The headliners were already in place. Western Kentucky simply rounds out a schedule that should give Illinois every opportunity to prove it’s one of the nation’s best before Big Ten play even tips off.
