Illinois Basketball: Marcus Domask’s All-Time Performance

Wow! Illinois Basketball leaves Madison Square Garden with elite vibes. Last year, Illinois downed the number 2 ranked, Texas Longhorns in a thriller. This year, Illinois Basketball played an extremely high-level game against the Florida Atlantic Owls. The Owls are the number 11 ranked team in the country and are fresh off a final-four trip. Illinois Basketball fans will hope that the subsequent part of this season does not mimic what happened after last year’s MSG victory, however, there is so much reason for optimism. This is an old, scrappy, and determined team. To add on to that, they are led by a group of confident, thirsty veterans.

Marcus Domask stole the show tonight. The Southern Illinois transfer dropped 33 points in a jaw-dropping performance. Terrence Shannon Jr continued his strong play, however, Marcus Domask stole the show.

The all-so-necessary second option

Illinois Basketball is at its best when Terrence Shannon Jr does not have to do everything. As with all college programs, there has to be a distribution of wealth. For example, Illinois Basketball did their best when Trent Frazier and Da’Monte Williams contributed to Ayo Dosunmu’s stardom. They did their best when Jacob  Grandison and Alfonso Plummer made shots alongside Kofi Cockburn. If two players can successfully supplement Terrence Shannon Jr each and every night, Illinois will be such a hard out.

Marcus Domask dropped 33 points on 15-21 shooting. Terrence Shannon Jr also dropped 33 points on 10-14 shooting. They were able to fight off an explosive FAU offense with Domask’s and Shannon’s dominance. However, Justin Harmon was just as important a piece. The 5th year senior had 10 efficient points.

What’s Next?

Illinois will continue its tough schedule. They travel to Tennessee to take on a very experienced and talented roster at their home court. Though Coleman Hawkins has yet to find his offensive form, his presence makes the Illini so much better. The offense flows way better and his defensive versatility puts everyone at ease. This is a fun Illinois squad. We hope that they continue this strong play each and every night.
