Illinois basketball offers four-star forward Isaiah Santos

Brad Underwood and Illinois basketball have never been afraid to go against the grain on the recruiting trail. Their latest offer is another example of that philosophy.

The Illini extended a scholarship offer Friday to four-star 2027 forward Isaiah Santos, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound prospect from Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas. Ranked No. 79 nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, Santos has become one of the more intriguing wings in the 2027 class. Per DuShawn London of 247Sports, Santos is trying to lock in an official visit date to the Illini.

On the surface, Santos doesn’t seem like the typical Illinois target. In recent years, Underwood has prioritized players who can stretch the floor and make defenses pay from beyond the arc. Santos isn’t known as a prolific three-point shooter. While he’s capable of knocking one down, his game is built around physicality, effort, and athleticism rather than perimeter scoring. Those traits, however, may be exactly why Illinois got involved.

Motor and Athleticism

Santos is a relentless competitor who plays with a nonstop motor. He attacks the glass on both ends, embraces contact and consistently finds ways to impact winning without needing the offense to run through him. His explosiveness allows him to finish above the rim, while his strength and lateral quickness make him a versatile defender capable of guarding multiple positions.

Perhaps most importantly, Santos understands how to play without the basketball. He’s an underrated passer, runs the floor hard, and creates extra possessions through hustle plays that don’t always show up in the scoring column.

Illinois basketball is far from the first high-major program to identify Santos’ potential. His offer list already includes Power Four programs such as Houston, Minnesota, Auburn and Butler, with more expected to join the race as the 2027 cycle progresses. 

Every recruiting cycle includes prospects who fit a system on paper. Santos feels like a player who fits Brad Underwood’s identity. The outside shot can continue to develop over the next two years. The toughness, competitiveness, and physical edge that Santos already possesses are much harder to teach. That’s likely what Illinois saw when it decided to make the four-star forward one of its newest priorities in the 2027 recruiting class.
