With the NBA Draft still more than a month away on June 23rd, the attention around Keaton Wagler has naturally shifted toward what comes next, with the freshman star projected by some as high as the No. 5 overall pick.

But before the next chapter begins, I keep thinking about how much fun this season was to experience with my friends and family. That’s one of the best parts of sports — the people you share it with. Getting to watch Wagler go nuclear while sitting next to my 7-year-old son, who worships the ground these college basketball players walk on, is something I won’t soon forget. Jumping up and down in the living room with my son — wearing his Wagler jersey — after Keaton hit his ninth three against Purdue felt like one of those sports memories that stays with you forever.

1. The Night Mackey Became Wagler’s Stage

No game captured Wagler’s season better than that night at Purdue.

In one of the greatest individual performances in Big Ten history, Keaton Wagler erupted for 46 points in an 88-82 win at Mackey Arena. He shot 13-for-17 from the field and buried 9 of 11 from three-point range, setting Illinois’ single-game record for made triples while scoring the most points ever by a visiting player at Mackey. It was one of those performances where every shot felt inevitable, like everyone in the building knew what was coming and still couldn’t stop it.

2 The Nebraska Encore

Then came the follow-up at Nebraska. Just days after torching Purdue, Keaton Wagler poured in 28 points against another top-five opponent, once again taking over after halftime. He scored 23 of those points in the game’s final 20 minutes, flipping the momentum and proving his performance at Mackey was no one-night phenomenon.

As Illinois coach Brad Underwood put it afterward, “Keaton did Keaton things in the second half.” The line was simple, but it captured exactly what Illinois fans had already learned — when the moment got bigger, Wagler got better. His back-to-back road masterpieces gave him 74 combined points in two brutal environments and completely shifted the Big Ten race.

The Shot That Sent Illinois to the Final Four

But his most clutch moment might have come in the Elite Eight.

With a Final Four berth on the line against Iowa, Wagler scored 25 points and buried one of the most ridiculous stepback threes I’ve ever seen. Keaton playedwith the poise of a veteran and leading Illinois to its first Final Four since 2005. He connected on two of Illinois’ three total three-pointers and was at his best attacking downhill. He used his elite change-of-pace and exceptional finishing ability to get to the rim and convert through traffic. Wagler willed the Illini to the Final Four on the offensive end. It was the kind of performance that showed his game is far more complete than just highlight-reel shooting, and it produced the kind of defining tournament moment Illinois fans will be replaying for years.

Honorable Mention: Braggin’ Rights Beatdown

One honorable mention belongs to the Braggin’ Rights demolition of Missouri. Wagler finished with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals in a 91-48 rout. That game wasn’t just domination. It was a statement that the freshman phenom was ready for every big stage college basketball could offer.

The stats were ridiculous, but the memories matter more. Every time my son hits a stepback three in the driveway and yells “Wagler!” before the ball even leaves his hands. I’m reminded that the best sports seasons become part of your family story long after the games are over. And no matter where Wagler hears his name called on draft night, this Illinois season gave fans memories that won’t be going anywhere.
