For a player who arrived at Illinois with little fanfare, Keaton Wagler completed the most remarkable rise in program history on Tuesday night.

The Los Angeles Clippers selected Wagler with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, making him Illinois’ highest-drafted player since Deron Williams went third overall in 2005. It caps a meteoric one-year journey for the Shawnee, Kansas native, who went from under-the-radar recruit to one of the most coveted prospects in a loaded draft class.

Wagler’s freshman season at Illinois left little doubt that he belonged among the nation’s elite prospects. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range. His combination of shooting, feel, versatility, and efficiency quickly transformed him from a promising newcomer into a projected lottery pick.

The Clippers had been heavily linked to Wagler throughout the pre-draft process, and that connection ultimately proved accurate. Multiple reports entering draft night pointed to Los Angeles viewing him as one of the best fits available at No. 5.

Keaton Wagler fits in Los Angeles

The fit is super intriguing. Wagler joins a Clippers organization that is building around Darius Garland in the backcourt. While Garland thrives with the ball in his hands, Wagler’s ability to play on or off the ball should make the pairing seamless. He is one of the draft’s best movement shooters, but he also showed enough secondary playmaking at Illinois to punish defenses that overload toward Garland.

Just as important, Wagler’s size gives the Clippers a bigger option next to Garland than many of the other guards considered in the top 10. His shooting and basketball IQ should allow him to contribute immediately while still offering significant long-term upside.

Illinois basketball has produced plenty of NBA talent over the last few years. On Tuesday night, Keaton Wagler added his name to the very top of that list.
