Should Illinois Basketball go all in on Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell?

Illinois basketball target John Blackwell.

Illinois basketball will be a major player in the 2026 transfer portal. With the portal officially open, the Illini will now look to make a big splash to build off an impressive 2026 prep recruiting class. As of now, it looks like Illinois will be targeting a scoring guard that can play both on and off the ball. One major name that has been tied to the Illini is Wisconsin guard John Blackwell.

Blackwell is one of the premier guards in the Big Ten and just announced that he will be entering the NBA draft process while also entering the transfer portal. He spent three seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers and just completed a junior season averaging 19.1 points per game.

The Illini have been prepared to make a run at John Blackwell, who will have a long list of suitors.

The Sell

First off, Illinois basketball can pitch a legacy. His Father, Glynn, played for the Illini from 1984 to 1988. Glynn Blackwell was also seen at the Final Four supporting the Illini alongside many other former alumni. There certainly is a pull for his son to join one of the best teams in the Big Ten that has helped elevate many guard to the NBA.

With Keaton Wagler and Kylan Boswell gone, Blackwell would immediately step into a lead guard role. His presence would help freshmen guards Quentin Coleman and Lucas Morillo settle into their roles.

The Illini are fully equipped to pursue John Blackwell, but it won’t be easy to land a player of his caliber.

Going Against Illinois…

Reportedly, Duke and Michigan are planning to pursue John Blackwell. Michigan has an incredible sell coming off a national championship, with a lot of its current players running out of eligibility. Of course, Duke is Duke and will always be a player to get any player that they are involved with.

On top of that, Blackwell’s price is going to be at least a couple of million dollars in NIL money. Illinois has to pay its frontcourt and Andrej Stojakovic quite handsomely if they want a chance at retaining them. Though they are likely able to financially compete with Blackwell, the question is whether the price tag is worth it for Illinois. Would you rather make a splash or make sure you return your previous players and build some depth?

Those are questions Illinois will have to figure out.
