Illinois Football Announces No Spring Game In 2026
Why Illinois Football won’t host a Spring Game in 2026, according to Coach Bielema.

As spring football kicks off for the Illinois football program, head coach Bret Bielema confirmed during Monday’s (3/23) media availability that there won’t be a spring game in 2026. This decision to forgo the opportunity to host fans and provide an early look at the 2026 roster marks the second straight year Illinois has passed on a traditional spring showcase. That said, it’s a growing trend across college football, as programs look to keep as much information as possible in-house.
For coach Bielema, the reasoning was pretty straightforward. With Bobby Hauck stepping in for his first season as the Illini’s DC, the staff is prioritizing installing his new 3-3-5 system and focusing on development. So, it’s probably in the Illini’s best interest that they not put that on display.
“I’m aware that we’ve got a new defensive scheme, so we’re not having a spring game,” Bielema said. “I’m probably going to limit the amount of information going out about that—especially visual information to go along with it.”
Plus, Bielema pointed to some major ongoing construction at Memorial Stadium, including a new end zone video board that will be the largest in college football. With that kind of project underway, it’s yet another factor that will naturally require some time and limit what can be done around the facility this spring.
“That’s more based on the current world of college football,” Bielema added. “We’re also getting an end zone video board installed, which will be a construction project in itself and will limit some of the things we can do in the facility.”
NOTE: Bielema also noted the full roster is expected to be released next week, once the staff works through more positional evaluations.
