Why Ca’Lil Valentine is set for breakout junior season for the Illini

Ca’Lil Valentine had a solid first game in the 2026 season opener. The Hayward, CA native had 11 carries for 88 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown run. He also returned a kickoff for 31 yards and caught a pass in the backfield for four yards. Valentine led the team in carries in what was an efficient night for the Illini offense. Though UAB had more time of possession, Illinois quickly scored in a lot of its possessions, including the drive capped off by Valentine’s TD run.

A lot of attention goes to QB Katin Houser, and for good reason. However, Ca’Lil Valentine is primed for a big season in Champaign as the starting running back and one of the Illini’s most potent offensive weapons. As a sophomore, Valentine rushed 131 times for 614 yards. He has shown that he can handle a heavy workload each game. To control the tempo of the game a little more, expect the Illini to run the ball more in their following games vs Duke and SIU.

Ca’Lil has burst and wiggle in the backfield and a skill set that can help the Illini past just running the football.

A factor in the passing game?

The Illini have had some key injuries to their wide receiver core. Transfers Jayshon Platt and Alex Perry were expected to play a big role, but Platt is out with an undetermined timeline and Perry is out for the season. Though Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement are proven producers at the Big Ten level, the Illini may turn to their deep stable of running backs to play a role in the passing game. In all, Barry Lunney Jr. and Bret Bielema are keen on getting the ball to their most reliable playmakers. Ca’Lil Valentine is one of those guys and he’s ready for a breakout season in Champaign.
