Illinois Football Beats UAB 42-23: Katin Houser Shines, Defense Struggles

Illinois football got the win it needed to open the 2026 season. Despite a close game heading into the last play of the half, the Illini pulled away with a comprehensive victory.

Illinois football led just 14-13 with less than a minute remaining in the first half. They needed a 54-yard Hail Mary from Katin Houser to Ty Robinson on the final play before halftime to create some breathing room. The Illini then finally took control in the second half, but the score doesn’t tell the full story of how uncomfortable this game was for stretches.

Katin Houser Gives Illinois Plenty to Believe In

The biggest positive from the opener was the play of Houser. The ECU transfer completed 13 of 17 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns while adding 29 rushing yards and another score on the ground. Two of his four incompletions were drops, and he consistently looked comfortable running the offense. Illinois scored touchdowns on five of its first seven drives, and Houser showed the accuracy, athleticism, and decision-making the Illini hoped they were getting when they brought him in. One game doesn’t answer every question at quarterback, but Houser certainly gave Illinois plenty of reason to feel good about the position.

Dixon, Valentine and Holmes Provide Some Needed Answers

Illinois football also got strong performances from several veterans. Collin Dixon caught all six of his targets for 70 yards and two touchdowns, establishing himself as Houser’s clear go-to receiver. Ca’Lil Valentine provided the explosive element Illinois needs from its running game, rushing for 88 yards on 11 carries and breaking loose for a 51-yard touchdown. On defense, Will Holmes was arguably the Illini’s most disruptive player, recording three quarterback hits and helping create the pressure that led to Ismael Kante’s 59-yard pick-six. Those performances provide some legitimate optimism heading into the rest of the season.

The Tackling Has to Get Fixed

The biggest concern was on the defensive side of the ball. Illinois’ new 3-3-5 defense generated six tackles for loss and six quarterback hits, but too many plays continued after the initial contact. UAB finished with 194 rushing yards and 413 total yards while controlling the clock for more than 41 minutes. The Blazers repeatedly extended drives because Illinois struggled to finish tackles, particularly at the linebacker level. Bret Bielema acknowledged that the Illini tackled less during training camp than usual because of injury concerns, but that excuse won’t matter against better competition. Illinois has to clean that up quickly.

The Running Game Remains a Question

The Illini’s rushing attack was also inconsistent. Illinois ripped off four carries for 82 yards in the first quarter, but managed only 68 rushing yards on 22 carries during the final three quarters. Valentine provided the huge touchdown, but Illinois can’t rely on explosive plays to carry its ground game every week. The offense was good enough to overcome that against UAB, but the margin for error gets much smaller once the schedule gets tougher.

Illinois Eventually Did What Good Teams Do

For all of the concerns, Illinois deserves credit for eventually taking control of the game. Houser led touchdown drives to open the second half, turning a one-score game into a 35-16 lead. Kante’s pick-six then pushed the advantage to 42-16 and finally put the game away.

That’s probably the most important takeaway from the opener. Illinois wasn’t perfect, and there were stretches when UAB looked capable of pulling off the upset. But the Illini didn’t panic. They made enough plays to separate in the second half and walked out of Champaign with a 42-23 victory.

The result was good. The performance was a mixed bag.

And with Duke coming to town next, Illinois will have to clean up the bad before the good starts getting tested against much better competition.
