Former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. makes All-Summer League First team
The former Illini continues to build his case as an up-and-coming NBA player.
Terrence Shannon Jr. continues to cement his case as an NBA player. After limited action during his rookie season, many questioned what the former Illini would be able to do on such a deep Minnesota Timberwolves squad. However, Shannon Jr. received praise from many of the Wolves coaches and leadership about his future. Those comments were certainly backed up by yet another strong string of performances for Shannon Jr. While playing in the 2025 NBA summer league, Terrence Shannon Jr. averaged 22.7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.7 steals through three games on close to 48 percent from the field. This performance led to a selection for the All-Summer League team
Over the three games, Terrence showed his improved playmaking and overall efficiency from the field. On top of that, he continues to show that he is an elite downhill force. With the Timberwolves trying to play more of fast-paced offense led by superstar Anthony Edwards, Shannon Jr. fits the team’s needs. On top of that, he provides versatility on the defensive side of the ball. That versatility was highlighted in the 2025 playoffs when Terrence guarded MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Outlook into year two for Terrence Shannon Jr.
Terrence Shannon Jr. should have an increased role heading into year two. He is too dangerous an athlete in the open floor to be piling up minutes sitting on the bench. As he moves forward with his NBA career, however, he will need to improve as a catch-and-shoot option on the wing. Given the way the Timberwolves are constructed, Anthony Edwards and forward Julius Randle are going to handle a lot of the ball-handling duties in the half court. If Shannon Jr. can continue to run the floor and cut to the rim, he should have no problem carving out a significant role.
