Former Illinois Basketball Wing Drops 35 Points in Loss
Former Illinois Basketball wing, RJ Melendez, transferred to the Georgia Bulldogs this past offseason. Melendez had a bright freshman campaign, however, struggled heavily in an increased role as a Sophomore. RJ opted for a fresh start and took his talents to the SEC and the Georgia Bulldogs. The Puerto Rican native has had a rather stable role off of the bench and has continued inconsistent production. However, he dropped 35 points in an overtime loss to the Florida Gators.
RJ put up an efficient 13-19 shooting night, went 6-10 from three, and also added 5 steals to his impressive scoring output. The former Illinois Basketball wing always had elite athleticism and length that will serve him well in his basketball career.
The Benefit of the transfer portal.
As RJ Melendez has found a new home, Illinois Basketball also benefitted through the portal. Landing Marcus Domask, Quincy Guerrier and Justin Harmon has elevated Illinois basketball. It is safe to say that all three players are drastic upgrades over the members of the team last year who have now left the team. As Lovie Smith famously said, “Sometimes Divorce is a good thing”
