Illini Standout Kasparas Jakucionis named B1G Freshman of the week
The 18-year old Lithuanian guard averaged 23 points per game vs two ranked opponents.
Illini freshman, Kasparas Jakucionis, was named B1G freshman of the week after averaging 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in two ranked showdowns. Jakucionis has caught the college basketball world’s attention with his stellar play and star potential as an 18-year-old true freshman. The Illini have completely handed over the keys to their star freshman as he is clearly the straw that stirs the drink for the Illini. Kasparas Jakucionis’ performances helped the Illini earn a key home victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday.
Though he put up a nice stat line in the heartbreaking loss to Tennessee, Jakucionis struggled with turnovers (7 total) and a 5 of 15 shooting effort. As the season progresses, he will need to learn to take care of the ball in key situations. Additionally, Brad Underwood may need to look at using other ball-handlers to offload Kasparas Jakucionis.
Kasparas Jakucionis cannot do it alone.
Kasparas Jakucionis is the second Illini basketball player to win this award as fellow freshman Will Riley won the award early in the season. Riley, however, has struggled since winning the honors. In his last four games, Riley has shot 26.5 percent from the field and is shooting just 1 for his last 15 from the three. If Illinois wants to reach its potential, it needs Riley and senior, Ben Humrichous, to get out of their respective slumps as soon as possible.
