Illini AD Josh Whitman Nears A Contract Extension With Illinois

Josh Whitman’s impressive run transforming Illinois athletics doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon.

As first reported by college football insider Matt Fortuna, Illinois is expected to approve a multi-year contract extension for the Illini AD, following the proposed amendment that appeared on the University’s Board of Trustees agenda for Thursday’s meeting. While the extension won’t become official until the Board votes, all signs point toward Illinois locking in Whitman for the time being, as he continues to operate one of the most successful eras in recent program history.

Fortuna broke the news on X, stating, “Illinois AD Josh Whitman is set to receive a multi-year contract extension, according to UI system’s BoT agenda for today’s meeting.

Whitman, the Big Ten’s second-longest tenured AD, has reinvigorated Illini athletics, hiring Brad Underwood, Bret Bielema and Shauna Green while shattering fundraising records at his alma mater.”

UPDATE: As reported by Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer, Josh Whitman’s contract extension has been approved. The contract extends to 2035-2036 and pays Whitman a base salary of 26.1 million dollars. The contract also includes a non-compete clause with all other universities and colleges. Per Werner’s article, Whitman is set to earn $2.15 million in his first year, up from $1.51 million last year, and the contract adds $100,000 every year until he makes a $3.15 million base. The Illini AD will also be eligible for various bonuses throughout the next 10 years based off the competitive benchmarks of Men’s basketball and football.

A Decade of Transformation Under Whitman

Since returning to his alma mater in 2016, Josh Whitman has dramatically shifted the trajectory of Illini athletics. At the time, he inherited a struggling athletic department looking for consistency after years of frustrating underachievement across several high-revenue programs. Since then, success under Whitman has changed the way the program is viewed. He has helped restore belief in the fact that sustained success is possible in Champaign.

Whitman’s biggest impact has been the hires that he has made in Champaign. Notably, Brad Underwood has reignited Illinois men’s basketball and turned the Illini into a national contender, Bret Bielema has built Illinois football into a respected and ascending Big Ten program with its sights set on the College Football Playoff, and Shauna Green has quickly elevated the women’s program back into the NCAA Tournament conversation.

Beyond the success of Illinois’ athletic programs, Whitman has also remained at the forefront of the conversations shaping the future of college athletics. From helping navigate the NCAA’s evolving landscape to continuing to set fundraising records, invest in facilities, strengthen NIL efforts, and position Illinois to compete in an era defined by revenue sharing and the transfer portal, Whitman has continued to prove why Illinois views him as the right person to lead the department forward.

Assuming the Board approves the amendment later Thursday, the extension certainly does not come as much of a surprise.
