Illinois Women’s basketball set to meet high expectations heading into 2026-2027 season
Illinois women’s basketball had its own version of #TheRetention
Illinois Women’s basketball has had as big a turnaround as any Illini program. Over the past four seasons, Shauna Green has helped lead the program to three NCAA tournament appearances and three 20-win seasons (one 19-win season). The Fighting Illini have consistently thrived as the underdogs of the Big Ten, and are always a scrappy, tough team to play. The 2026-2027 season, however, should be a lot different. The Illinois Women’s basketball team has a target on its back and should be one of the better teams in the Big Ten conference.
Shauna Green’s crew brings back practically the entire roster that went to the second round of the NCAA tournament and won over 20 games. Talented youngsters, Cearah Parchment and Destiny Jackson, are all coming back with valuable experience to play alongside veterans Berry Wallace, Maddie Webber, and Gretchen Dolan. On top of that, the Illini bring in former five-star guard Divine Bourrage, who played her freshman season at LSU. Also, key pieces like Aaliyah Guyton, Jasmine Brown-Hagger, Lety Vasconcelos and Manuella Alves are all set to contribute at a high level.
The Retention
As with all college sports, teams with continuity and experience tend to do very well. For the first time in her tenure at Champaign, the expectations are high for Shauna Green. With so much talent and returning veterans, Illinois should be a force to be reckoned with. Each year, the program has taken big steps in the right direction as a force in the Big Ten program. Attendance at the State Farm Center continues to grow for home women’s basketball games and rightfully so.
If the Illini can stay healthy, watch out.
